Laing STEM Advisory Board Meeting Notes

February 14, 2017

Captain Heller and Mark Durham, SPAWAR

Mel Goodwin, Megan Wickline , Mr. Whitehair, Laing Middle

Susie Starkman, The Code Lady

 Robin Willis, Chamber

Laing Named Best STEM school, have applied before but believe they received it this year because they had a vision. Mel says they still have a long way to go inside the classroom. PBL is the way of the future. Still hard to fit standards in, still so much is required to do not a lot of time left. Seeing staff grow in knowledge and skill, stretching them to new ways to teach. app is a mind mapping tool. Might use it to help students decompose problems – this is always hard for students

Maybe use a Functional Design Block. Show them Castle Walls

Get small group of teachers to identify some curriculum that could incorporate complex problem solving and mind process/maps

Lots of working with Susie, The Code Lady, coming up

Can students learn standards as quickly with these new methods? Teachers don’t want to lose instructional time.

Megan wants to do a big thing for Pi Day 3/14. This is the 3rd year, struggling with how to make it new. Exhausted the good ideas.  6 groups will go through stations/activities from 10-2 p.m. Still need people and activities

Mark Durham helped a lot with Megan – mock client with 6th grade math. Box needed to hold a secret expensive instrument, used egg to simulate. Can build on this in 7th and 8th grade. Mark made it real. Tied low cost, exact curriculum, high student interest, real world
